Gary Jessop

Bio

I am a qualified counsellor, integrated therapist and hypnotherapist.

The most important aspect of therapy with successful outcomes is the relationship between the therapist and the client and I strongly believe that it is important for me to work with my clients based on who they really are as individuals and what they would like to bring to and take away from their sessions, rather than to label or diagnose.

My previous professional career has given me personal experience of the impact of high stress environments, where the pressure can often lead to feelings of anxiety and loss of control. For more than 20 years I worked at a senior level in the financial markets covering FX, bonds, stocks and derivatives in multiple financial centres across Europe and the Far East.

I decided to redress the balance and retrained as a counsellor, with the aim of offering wellness support to a sector in which mental health issues are often stigmatised and even ridiculed.

My own experience of extended exposure to those high-pressure settings affords me a unique insight into how that ‘high performance-high reward’ culture can impact our personal lives as well as the time we spend at work. It allows me to support my clients from across the spectrum of professional disciplines, thanks to the understanding brought by very similar lived experience of a fast-paced working culture, where there is a tremendous weight of pressure on both individuals and businesses.

I provide a wellbeing service which has been specifically created to meet the needs of finance and other professionals at all levels. With my specialist understanding and insight, I work to address anxiety and stress, professional relationships and any presenting issues and triggers which may be causing concern.

Away from the trading floor, in 2007 I took a sabbatical from my position in Hong Kong to join the crew of a 68-foot ocean racing yacht in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. As someone with very limited sailing experience, I returned 40,000 miles later as a global circumnavigator, armed with a wealth of learning from an unforgettable adventure packed with exhilarating highs and deep lows. I apply those lessons to testing situations in everyday life and, where appropriate, share them with my clients to help them in their own situations.

It’s widely acknowledged that sailing as a team is a great leveller and that’s why it is one of the core activities around which we build our offsite wellness events.

I am a volunteer for the charity, Cruse Bereavement Support, supporting people through their grief.

Stress and anxiety are a part of today’s working culture. It’s a simple fact. In the financial sector, where high performance equates to high reward and I have seen first-hand the impact of burnout and how that can affect you as an individual as well as those you interact with daily, be that your colleagues, family or friends.

I offer a tailor-made, confidential and flexible service which can be in-person (close to financial centres on specific days) or via video or phone, or a combination of all. As senior professionals are often out of the office on business trips or working abroad, my aim is to be available by whichever means best suits the individual seeking my advice and support. Some of my clients also find it beneficial to walk and talk, which can also be arranged. My practice is based on the south coast, where a walk by the sea can further help to reduce stress levels.

Whichever your preferred method of contact, I provide a safe, empathetic space, encouraging open and honest dialogue; a space in which you can freely and openly express and raise any issues that are affecting your work and your personal relationships.

Wellbeing and stress management are key contributors to improved professional performance, client relationships (internal and external) and business continuity. The global pandemic has only added to the causes and levels of stress placed on those working in finance and other professions, so now is the time to invest in targeted support.

Early assistance and intervention is my personal recommendation, from both business and individual perspectives. In essence, techniques which enable and produce improved mental clarity and wellbeing have proven universal benefits.

My professional practice is fully insured.

In Person

The session is set in a confidential environment in a physical location where we can banish the distractions of everyday life and focus on your mental wellbeing.

Online

Online counselling sessions allow you to work from anywhere. We can’t control your environment, so it is up to you to make sure you are in a place you can talk freely, and express yourself safely.

Telephone

You may prefer working with us by phone – the choice is totally yours. If you are unable to make it to a face-to-face or computer session then you can have uninterrupted support over the phone.

Walk & Talk

We take our in-person sessions outside into the fresh air where we can get closer to nature and talk as we walk.

Pricing

There are four main ways we can conduct counselling sessions for individuals: over the phone, online via video call, a face to face sit down session, or walking and talking if you’d prefer something more active.

If you would like to arrange a group programme, please have a look at our offsite wellness events or send us an email with a few details about your requirements.
